On Realizing Planning Programs in Domains with Dead-End States

چکیده
Agent planning programs are finite-state programs, possibly containing loops, whose atomic instructions consist of a guard, a maintenance goal, and an achievement goal, which act as precondition-invariance-postcondition assertions in program specification. The execution of such programs requires generating plans that meet the goals specified in the atomic instructions, while respecting the program control flow. Recently, De Giacomo et al. (2016) presented a technique, based on iteratively solving classical planning problems with action costs, for realizing planning programs in deterministic domains. Such a technique works generally well for domains with no or very few dead-end states. In this paper, we propose an enhancement of this technique to handle deterministic domains that have potentially many dead-end states, and we study the effectiveness of our technique through an experimen-

Search and Learn: On Dead-End Detectors, the Traps they Set, and Trap Learning
A key technique for proving unsolvability in classical planning are dead-end detectors ∆: effectively testable criteria sufficient for unsolvability, pruning (some) unsolvable states during search. Related to this, a recent proposal is the identification of traps prior to search, compact representations of non-goal state sets T that cannot be escaped. Here, we create new synergy across these id...
متن کاملSixthSense: Fast and Reliable Recognition of Dead Ends in MDPs
The results of the latest International Probabilistic Planning Competition (IPPC-2008) indicate that the presence of dead ends, states with no trajectory to the goal, makes MDPs hard for modern probabilistic planners. Implicit dead ends, states with executable actions but no path to the goal, are particularly challenging; existing MDP solvers spend much time and memory identifying these states....
متن کاملAn Effective Approach to Realizing Planning Programs
Planning programs are loose, high-level, declarative representations of the behavior of agents acting in a domain and following a path of goals to achieve. Such programs are specified through transition systems that can include cycles and decisions to make at certain points. We investigate a new effective approach for solving the problem of realizing a planning program, i.e., informally, for fi...
متن کاملA Decision-Theoretic Academic Advisor: Extended Abstract
This paper describes work related to stochastic modeling and decision-theoretic (DT) planning methods applicable to the real-world domain of academic advising. The uncertainty associated with stochastic planning is often approached as a problem of finding a complete mapping from states to actions (a policy). A need to plan for all contingent futures makes (DT) planning an inherently difficult p...
متن کاملActing in Partially Observable Environments When Achievement of the Goal Cannot be Guaranteed
The problem of planning in partially observable environments can be regarded as a search problem in belief space where beliefs express the collection of states that are deemed possible. In this paper we address the problem that arises when one of the possible states is a dead-end: a state from which the goal cannot be reached. In such situations, no contingent plan exists, and yet, such situati...
